Bitcoin casinos: how deposits, fees and withdrawals work

A Bitcoin casino accepts BTC for deposits and usually pays out in BTC. The mechanics are those of any Bitcoin payment, but a mistake costs more here because blockchain transfers cannot be reversed. This guide explains the parts that trip people up.

How a Bitcoin casino deposit works

  1. In the casino’s cashier, choose Bitcoin (BTC) as the asset.
  2. The casino shows a deposit address and usually a QR code. Copy it fresh each time, or follow the cashier’s instructions if it tells you an address can be reused.
  3. Send BTC from your wallet or exchange to that address.
  4. Wait for the required number of blockchain confirmations. Your balance is then credited.
Send a small test amount first. Confirm it arrives before you send the full amount. The fee for a test is small compared with the cost of a mistake.

Confirmations and waiting times

New Bitcoin blocks arrive roughly every ten minutes on average. A transaction is “confirmed” once it is included in a block, and each further block adds another confirmation. Casinos typically wait for a set number of confirmations before crediting a deposit, and the number can be higher for larger amounts. Check the figure in the cashier rather than assuming it.

If you set a very low fee during a busy period, your transaction can wait in the queue for hours. You can follow its progress by pasting the transaction ID (TXID) into a public block explorer.

Network fees

Bitcoin fees depend on the size of the transaction in bytes and on how busy the network is, not on how much you send. Most wallets let you pick a fee tier. A casino may also set a minimum deposit, apply its own withdrawal fee, or both. Very small transfers can lose a large share of their value to fees.

Address formats

Bitcoin addresses come in several formats. Older addresses start with 1, script-hash addresses start with 3, and newer SegWit and Taproot addresses start with bc1. Some coins from the wider Bitcoin family use address formats that look similar, so confirm the asset and network as well as the address. When withdrawing, check that the casino supports sending to the address format your wallet gives you.

The Lightning Network

Lightning is a second layer on top of Bitcoin designed for fast, low-fee payments. Some casinos support Lightning deposits or withdrawals, and many do not. Lightning and on-chain Bitcoin are not interchangeable: a Lightning invoice (which typically starts with lnbc) cannot be paid to an on-chain address, and the reverse is also true. Invoices also expire, so pay them promptly.

Price volatility

Bitcoin’s price can move sharply in a short time. A balance that looks the same in BTC can be worth noticeably more or less in your local currency by the time you withdraw. Some casinos display balances in fiat while settling in crypto, so make sure you know which currency your balance is actually held in. If you want to avoid price swings, some players use stablecoins instead, which bring their own network considerations (see our payments guide).

Frequently asked questions

Are Bitcoin casino withdrawals instant?

Not necessarily. The casino may review the request, apply verification checks or queue withdrawals, and the transaction then has to be confirmed on the blockchain. Check the operator’s current withdrawal terms.

Can I send Litecoin or Bitcoin Cash to a Bitcoin deposit address?

No. Send only the exact asset and network the cashier asks for. Funds sent on the wrong asset or network are often impossible to recover.

Do Bitcoin casinos require ID?

It depends on the operator, your activity and your country. Many reserve the right to ask for documents, particularly before withdrawals. See our no-KYC guide for how to read these clauses.
